Stone Types
Fieldstone
Sometimes called "cobblestone", fieldstone is a round stone with sides varying from 5 to 16 inches. Michigan and Canadian fieldstones are most common and are full of color with unique markings.
Contrary to the name, fieldstones are not from fields; the stones are quarried from gravel pits.
Flagstone
Flagstone is a quarried flat stone most commonly used for stone walks or patios.
There are many different kinds of flagstone, which can vary in thickness from 1 inch to 3-4 inches.
Ledgestone
Ledgestone is used in masonry when a more horizontal look is desired.
The stones are square and rectangle, and are laid in a wall using a level. The mortar joints are broken up or staggered to look more natural and less brick-like.
Split Stone
Split Stone is a round stone (like fieldstone) that has been split in half. The inner split face now becomes the outer face, and each stone must be hand chipped and faced to fit.
Michigan and Canadian stones are most common and are very colorful. The stone face is very rough and jagged, with an overall look of being clean and natural.
Thin Veneer Stone
There are two different kinds of thin veneer stone:
1. Manufactured Thin Veneer Stone - Most commonly called Cultured Stone. A handful of manufacturers provide a number of different styles.
2. Natural Thin Veneer Stone - This is a natural full stone that has been cut thin to be applied like a manufactured stone. It is very popular for those who want natural stone but don't have the footings to support full stone weight. This stone also is available in most stone styles.
